Sleep 101: Mattress buying tips
In keeping with our series on sleep, we've presented a survey on how Americans choose sleep sides and what it means to couples and their well-being called, “Pick your side”. Today we present the “Top Ten Mattress Buying Tips”. Featuring typical questions from consumers and answers from Ron Rudzin, CEO of Saatva Mattress, in our series on Sleep 101.
Top Ten Mattress Buying Tips
Q.: What should a customer look for to determine the quality of a mattress?
Quality is determined by construction. Look for higher density of non-toxic foams and dual innerspring construction, which prevents sagging. In the case of memory foam mattresses, look for higher weight/density of non-toxic foams. With either choice, look for an organic mattress for best health but if the consumer’s budget doesn't allow for this, a strong green initiative easily suffices.
Q. What type of mattress construction gives the best support and comfort?
Key to lumbar support—crucial for your back’s health—is the mattress construction and added layers of foams and spring usage or in the case of a memory foam mattress, more blended and denser layers of foam in the lumbar area. Focus only on a memory foam mattress that allows for the most efficient air circulation within the mattress. Memory foam mattresses offer the elimination of pressure points or discomfort that can contribute to the “tossing and turning at night” to find a comfortable sleep position. A well, handcrafted memory foam mattress also eliminates “motion transfer,” the annoying transfer of motion from one side of the bed to the other that can come from sleeping next to a restless sleeper
“Focus only on a memory foam mattress that allows for the most efficient air circulation within the mattress.”.
Q.: Does a pillow top mattress differ from a non-pillow top mattress when it comes to comfort?
Once considered a “luxury” item, affordable and innovative pillow top offerings are becoming standard for consumers in what to look for to optimise sleep. People with back, hip or overall joint pain will feel more comfortable on a bed that gently contours and nourishes the back, hips, shoulders and overall joints. Euro pillow tops, in particular, provide the right amount of cushion contouring in conjunction with providing proper firm support for the spine. And, a “tight top”. Mattress can be a good choice if the consumer is concerned with slight body impressions or the consumer is overweight.
Q.: Do the in eco-friendly offerings make sense?
Shop for greener options like plant-based memory foam and natural latex as well as natural or sustainable fibres like organic cotton, wool and bamboo. These can alleviate important concerns about toxic chemicals found in some mattress foams, glues and retardant chemical. Other eco-friendly offerings include coil springs made from recycled steel, outer coverings made from organic cotton and memory-foam layers made from safe, bio-based foam. Finally, gel and plant-based (bio-based) memory foam mattresses use less petroleum products, less off-gassing odour. Provide greater “breathability,” with plant-based foams sleeping 20-25% cooler than traditional memory foam.
“Cool sleep” is hot right now. Most buyers are unaware of the significant health benefit of ultra premium innerspring construction as compared to “all”. Foam mattresses. This type of innovation enables the mattress to “breath” as it provides airflow between springs, which allows for clean evaporation of water from nightly perspiration. Technology is also evolving to the availability of “medical gel,” the same cooling effect found in hospitals and burn units, where medical gel beds contours to prevent bedsores.
Q.: Is a coil mattress superior to non-coil mattresses?
Neither is superior to the other. These are two distinctly different types of comfort that's the personal choice of the consumer.
Q.: How do choose the right size?
Firstly, the mattress and foundation (if needed) must be able to fit into the room. Thought and diligence should be given to narrow staircases, tight corners, undersized elevators etc. Secondly, is there room for your choice of night tables? Take into consideration the different heights of mattresses and foundations. That the bed is proportionate to your headboard, night tables, wall hangings and windowsills. Then, of course, decide what your personal choice of size.
Q.: Is it better to buy online or in a store?
Consumer buying patterns are clearly showing consumers are tired of the nonsense of constant phoney and nonsensical sales and confusion found in stores. According to a Research Triangle Institute study, consumers are oftentimes “rushed” by in-store, commission-driven salespeople and pressured into selecting a mattress that didn't produce optimal sleep results. As a result, online mattress purchasing is on the rise. Certain online manufacturers today allow an extended in-home trial period, absent a 15-minute in store “test drive,” as well as non-commissioned customer support staff. Also, you can often find a better price online. Because there is no brick and mortar and overhead, inventory sitting in a store and no commission-driven salespeople, some e-commerce mattress leaders are able to sell for example, a luxury queen sized mattress for $899 compared to a similar mattress at a traditional retailer that costs $2,000.
Q.: What should I expect or demand in terms of delivery of my mattress?
Look for a mattress that's delivered and set up in your home. A boxed compressed mattress may not recover to full size and, while some manufacturers are folding mattresses for home delivery today, a high quality mattress shouldn't be able to be rolled up. Make sure the manufacturer uses top quality foams and that the company is mandated to follow proper guidelines. Non-mandated foams from other countries can contain dangerous carcinogens, linked to a variety of health concerns.
Q.: How do you negotiate price?
Buy from a friendly company that's a clean reputation and offers their product at a good price, every single day. Be aware of the many retailers approach to seemingly weekly sales. Unfortunately, in store comparison-shopping is almost impossible, as mattress factories will simply give different names and simply just change a ticking colour as the manufacturers work their deals with the retailers. Instead, look for a manufacturer that offers a true comparison-shopping experience.
Q.: What should you look out for?
Look at the reputation of the seller of mattresses, which is so easy to do in today’s internet world. The reviews should be abundant and they should be overwhelming positive by consumers who have slept on the product and if not, the consumer should move on to another source.
Make sure the manufacturer offers added benefits such as no restocking fees (there are brands that'd never restock a mattress!). A true return policy (and they all don’t!) where items can be returned for a full and prompt refund of the purchase price as compared to traditional showrooms/stores where most charge a return fee for restocking. Also, look for those that provide guaranteed “waiting time” for customers running late to get home for product delivery
